Upgraded my blog to the new wordpress v2.5
Unfortunately my WordPress theme is not up to date with the technologies of the newest version of WordPress 2.5!
Like most people I’m sure their WordPress blog is installed via cPanel’s Fantastico setup if their hosting account interface is cPanel which is what mine is. Fantastico has worked fine for me when installing stuff even though I’ve read that it’s better to do clean installs of blogs and forums instead of allowing Fantastico to do it automatically. I am no authority on that topic but Fantastico has worked fine for me…..the only caveat is that the versions preloaded for installation are usually not the most current version available.
When I logged into my blog’s admin area, I saw a prompting for upgrade. I did what I normally do and that’s to log into my cPanel and see if Fantastico offered a new upgrade and install it if there was one found. There was one so I installed the upgrade with a few clicks of the mouse.
Once I logged back into the WordPress admin console area, I noticed the same prompting for upgrade still appeared. That’s when I observed the version number. Apparently I had just upgraded my blog to a version Fantastico had available which I believe is like 2.3…so I was basically running way behind on the times with functionality.
No wonder some of the plugins I wanted to use wouldn’t work….and besides that, the theme I had been using that was adsense friendly for so long was basically out of date. It didn’t have all the newer cool features like the ability to show widgets in the sidebar. I can fumble my way around php and css stuff but my knowledge base isn’t so extensive that I know how to add the coding I need to get this theme up to speed and compliant all around.
The New version 2.5 admin interface is sweet and isn’t vastly different than previous versions which makes the adapting to something new not that difficult. Along with upgrading, I decided to start looking for a newer theme to use. There are soooooo many WordPress themes to sift through, whether you’re looking for layout or color scheme. For me, it’s gotta look fairly clean and function well…not to mention it has to be easily customizable too!
I had spent years trying to figure out the ins and outs of the current theme so I knew how to tweak it from blog to blog. Plug-ins are fun to use but some are only compatible to older versions and some newer plugins only work with newer versions. This has put me in a limbo situation many times throughout my blogging days.
For now, WordPress has been updated but my theme hasn’t. Some files I copied over during the “self installation” (because I wanted to use the newer version) had important tweaks that made the old plugins work within my old/current out dated theme so basically I had to rebuild some stuff. I’m a bit trigger happy with the deleting at times. :dunno:
I can’t wait until people start updating their plugins to work with this newest version of WordPress! That is always the gamble when getting the newest thing, the accessories are usually not put out yet as they would still be in development. If you’re looking to venture to do a self installation, the WordPress Documentations will ease you through the transition rather painlessly if you didn’t tweak your blog to all hell previously. Good luck, you’ll like the new interface!
