Number Portability was one of my main concerns with buying the Ooma Core VOIP Phone System. I had tried to call to inquire about before purchasing but couldn’t get through to anyone to ask. As I wrote in a previous post, I roll the dice.
I just got off the phone with an Ooma Customer Service Rep and the entire call lasted about 17 minutes. It took about 12 to 13 minutes of being on hold and then surprisingly, someone picked up!
He asked me basic account info and then said that my number is portable to them which I figure would be the case since I live within minutes of two major cities and my current service is with verizon. The rep said 3 business days I should get an email for the porting and it can take up to a month for it go through after I fill out the paperwork.
He updated my credit card info for my account and said they will charge me the $40 bucks for the porting. I am however surprised that he didn’t attempt to upsell me to the premium service. I was hesitant to bring that up since I am not sure yet whether I want to splurge on the extra services that I don’t really NEED but they are pretty cool to have.
I’m curious if they would prorate the premium service to offset what I would have paid for the number porting if I decide to go with their $100/yr plan. Well I have their premium service on a 60 day trial and I will need to fill out the information for the $50 bonus international minutes for activating ooma by January 31, 2009. On that page, it says ANY authorized retailer on their page so I’m assuming that amazon.com would qualify even though it’s not mentioned on the amazon product description page.
It’s funny when the first thing the rep asked was whether I have activated and put to use the ooma system yet and I said…yep, I’m calling you right now with it!!
I do notice that my caller id say “ooma” for the number I’m temporarily using. It must take awhile for it to register with the user name instead of them. I really like the new number I picked which if they would have gently nudged me about the premium service, I would have bit easily.
So far so good….but it is day 2 so we shall see what happens as the weeks progress. Basically I’ve spent a total of $260 for the Ooma Core System and number porting. Our verizon bill was around $50 a month so in approximately 6 months, I will break even. My only wish was that the porting happened a lot quicker as with other companies. Here I am left with paying for my landline for another month or two while the porting is in progress.
Now if I can just get my cable bill reduced… that’s the next agenda on my list of cost savings for the new year! :good:
