Ok, I just found the service call on the Canon site for this camera. It's doesn't say red dot but it does say a marking inside the battery cover. I thought I read someone saying a red marking. Anyway, you can read about the Canon A650IS' light leak issue here.

In response to comment under: My blog is back - life of jean… lives again!

Hi Minh,

It's hard to say who has "defective" copies still in their inventory. It was my understanding that most merchants sent back their batches of cameras due to the recall. One thing to look for is the serial number on your camera.

Look at the bottom of your Canon PowerShot A650IS camera to find your serial number. The batches that were defective according to Canon is where there is a 0 (zero) in the 5th position of your serial number sequence. The new batches have a 1 in the 5th position and my new one certainly do have that.

However, if you have a zero in the 5th position and you have a red dot inside your battery cover, then that camera was fixed through Canon's warranty and the red dot signifies that. At least that's what I had read through the Canon site and other forums!

Good luck to you, this is a great camera!
