My Kefir Babies are here today! Ahh…more responsibilities for me but these babies are full of helpful bacteria for my digestive tract.
I’ve had one heck of a time lately with my health and it’s so unusual for me. I can’t remember the last time I was this ill health.
After my bout with a sinus infection and ending up taking two different types of antibiotics, I am sure that I’ve killed off any and all bacteria (helpful and otherwise) in my intestinal tract. There is a need to start adding back the good beneficial bacteria in order for full functioning, optimal digestion. It’s been really hard to go from being well and full of energy to feeling blah and tired for weeks. And it’s equally hard to go from being “regular” to well….not so regular, if you know what I mean.
Taking so many antibiotics (avelox for 6 days and 2 weeks later augmentin for 10 days) may have something to do with my ability to digest foods “regularly” so I’ve been eating yogurt twice a day for the past 4-5 days now. I’ve bought several different brands and I do like yogurt as long as it’s not the sugar free kind that has a funky aftertaste because of the artificial sweetener. Right now I don’t think my tastebuds are completely back to normal so tastes are still a bit elusive.
The same goes for my hearing….I think I’ve been going through life in monotone for close to two months now. The last couple of days my ear has started to crackle and pop whenever I yawn or just move my mouth around. I’ve regained probably 50% of my hearing back so far and I’m feeling like any day now, I will experience a miracle and life will once again be in stereo!
My energy is started to come back and I feel a bit stronger. I’m eating more too so that’s good and I am somewhat “regular” again. My bf suggested that I try making Kefir to add to my daily regimen to help further regulate my digestive system. He had me try the kefir he made and basically it tasted like sour thin yogurt.
Kefir is a cultured milk drink that has loads of beneficial bacteria that is basically good for your gut! Yogurt has certain types of bacteria while Kefir has other types. I can’t even begin to go into everything you need to know about Kefir but that website certainly has a TON of information.
Being the semi-adventurist type, I said “OK, I will try making it myself and drink it daily” when my bf said he would give me some of his Kefir grains. Today I got them and I have already greeted my new Kefir Babies with loving care by carefully straining them in cheesecloth and putting them in a clean quart size mason jar 3/4 filled with organic whole milk. They originally came from munching on raw cow’s milk but it’s hard to get raw milk here in Maryland so hopefully they will be just as happy with the organic whole milk I bought at the store.
They say it takes about 24hrs to turn a container of milk into kefir. I’m curious to go through the process and see for myself. Whenever my bf made his, I didn’t really pay much attention, he just fixes it and I drink it after he sweetens it with some honey. He tells me it’s great in smoothies!
I’m also anxious to see my new babies multiplying in size. Some say eating the extra grains add a powerful boost of good bacteria to your colon, etc but I feel weird eating the kefir grains just yet. I’m going to take good care of these babies and hopefully they will reward me in return by providing me with optimal health and regularity.
Maybe one day, my babies will multiply to the point where I’ll have extras to give to my friends and family……..if they are open minded enough to try it for themselves. I’m anxious to see what tomorrow will bring, I find myself every time I go into the kitchen to walk by my jar and seeing if I can actually see a change happening.
