Minor problems setting up my Palm TX but all is well now!
It’s only been two days since I received my newest electronic toy, the Palm TX and I’ve had some confusing times setting it up and basically learning to navigate it.
Luckily, the fumbling has finally settled down a bit earlier this afternoon! I was most frustrated on the first day because my in home wifi wasn’t connecting from my pda. It had worked for about 5 minutes and then stopped. Thank god for the wonderful Brighthand Forum and the immense knowledge there…plus the friendly atmosphere is really great!
After messing with the wifi issue all of last night, it turned out that our router was set to “G” band instead of “mixed”. Setting it to both bands actually drops our signal to the upstairs floor, I think its why we had set it to just G. The signal upstairs isn’t that strong anyway so now we’re looking for a boost.
Because of this….I found a great use for my pda today! We had bought an antenna for the router a year or so ago but it didn’t fit the connector so we didn’t do anything else to our setup. So today, I inputted the information of what I needed which is a female sma to a male tnc connector and then I grabbed the images off the web for that connector and had it on my pda. When I got to the store, I just asked the salesperson and one even asked to see a pic and I had it of course
None of the places carried it so I’ll just have to find it online….but it sure made the retail search a lot more efficient.
It’s interesting to scan for networks when I’m in a shopping center or at a traffic light waiting. I got my bluetooth working to my cell phone and I was able to walk around the store with my phone in my purse and pda in hand texting my friends….it’s hilarious!
At the forum, I was able to find the solution to not being able to get online via bluetooth to my cell…I had put att wireless instead of using cingular wap gprs! Now it works and if I can’t find free wifi while I’m out, I can use my phone on an as needed basis!
Being a total newbie to using a pda, one thing that really help me grasp the palm os was what someone posted there. I’m not sure who said it but they made it make sense to me by saying that with palm os, you have to open the application to see your files. On windows, I probably use windows explorer dozens of times a day looking for files. You click a file, the right app opens to view. With palm os, it was like opposite and when I got that in my head, things were a lot less frustrating!
I did download some of the “recommended or best apps” found on this forum, mostly utilities like FileZ, NVBackup,Off-It, several pdf readers because I have a lot of pdf ebooks I want to read with my pda. It seems each one has their advantages and disadvantages and I probably have spent a whole entire evening doing research and learning and applying.
So far, things are moving along and I am finally starting to enjoy the Palm TX …I may even venture to say that I’m starting to love it…and wonder how I got along all this time without it or a pda in general. I can just see all the possibilities like making a master shopping list with the brand names I use to keep it handy when I shop or having notes on the type of printer inks I use, the sizes of air filters I need to buy, etc…everything at my finger tips!
Someone replied to my post at the forum too about boosting the signal strength on my router and included a link to this page that has instructions and pics on building your own antenna setup….. I am totally gonna build an antenna setup hahaha…. with reflectors!
I just skimmed the page the guy mentioned and it seems that you can bounce or reflect the radio waves off of metal that’s shaped in a cylindrical shape….sort of like concentrating the signal towards a direction while shielding out other interferences.
I am SOOOO gonna build myself a homemade antenna reflector now!!
More research tomorrow on it, it’s so funny seeing how creative and resourceful people can be! I love it!! If I can figure out how to build myself a table top prize wheel for events I do, I can build some reflectors
And be sure I’ll take some photos too of my invention!
