Day 5 of taking Avelox for my Sinus Infection

I have one more day of taking the antibiotics Avelox for my sinus infection. I’m looking forward to not taking any medicine again!

As for my sinus infection, I’m not completely better but I’m not as bad as 5 days ago. I’ve gone through an entire big box of tissues coughing up and blowing out stuff. Judging by the appearance of my mucus, it seems the antibiotics is working.

However, I’m not sure if I’m getting side effects from the Avelox or whether I’m just still sick. I do notice that about 3 hours after taking it, I feel more pressure in my head and I start to get a headache. I’ve also noticed that my teeth hurts and the side of throat where I still have the clogged ear has been hurting. It’s not a scratchy throat kind of hurt but when I press the area of my neck where it joins to my jaw under my ear, that’s where it hurts a bit. Only when I press on it or if I stretch my neck.

I’m still waiting for my ear to unclog, one day I’ll be hearing in stereo again, I can’t wait til that day!

I have been looking for natural remedies the past few days. I want to feel better sooner especially for my upcoming trip next week. I found some websites that talked about using apple cider vinegar to combat sinus infections. It was interesting to read about all the different ways apple cider vinegar is helpful to the body.

I tried to drink some two days ago and I’m not sure if that helped or whether the antibiotics were kicking in or the teas I’ve been drinking that contain Echinacea is helping. All I know is that something is working and the vinegar tastes real bad. :yuck:

I even tried to do a steam inhalation with the 1 part water and 1 part vinegar. It sure burns a bit sniffing the steam in, I do notice that steaming with that seem to clear my nasal passages. But I’m not sure if it’s the vinegar steam that is working or whether the “steaming” itself is helpful. I only did it once and I’m tempted to do a steam inhalation with boiling water and a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil. I’m not sure why I have that but I do. That stuff is strong smelling but with my nose right now, I can’t smell a thing….and I can’t taste much either.

The other night I had a craving for honey and bananas. I felt better after eating that. And some oatmeal too. Whether it’s the properties in the honey or the potassium in the banana or the filling feeling of the carbs in the oatmeal, somehow, it made me feel better.

The teas really help. I picked up some gypsy cold remedy tea and I find it soothing. It’s got a minty taste, well I can’t really taste it but I feel the minty goodness. I put some honey in that too but I can only taste a little sweetness.

My doctor only prescribed me 6 days of antibiotics, I’ve read some people being on it for longer. I’m not sure what to think of that but once I finish my last dose tomorrow, I’ll be going all natural remedies. I just wish my ear would unclog….one day, one day soon.

  1. from someone who repeatedly gets sinus infections … try taking reg tylenol w/ the antibiotics (unless it says not to) … it keeps that pressure in your head down.

also - simply saline is an awesome product. i’ve not been able to take antibiotics for months now, and i started using the simply saline (basically just saline drops - but the dispenser works really well) daily. i’ve not had an infection in at least 9months since starting to use it. this is a HUGE improvement for me! My ENT (ear, nose, throat) dr recommended this product.

i hope that you feel better soon. sinus infections suck.

oh - and i should mention that one of my kids gets sinus infections too, and her pediatrician recommends a humidifier, saline drops for the nose, and tylenol/motrin. she had grown somewhat resistant to most antibiotics - so her last infection we went w/ no anitbiotics - her body fought it off well (w/ the above things).

    good luck.

  2. Thanks for the tips Jenn! I’ve finished off the last of my antibiotics and wasn’t taking anything with that. Now I find that I get these horrible sinus pressure pains in my head in the evenings. I’ve had to take a couple of advils to help with the pain, I don’t have tylenol. I’ll have to look into the nasal saline. I’ve read about it on other sites too. I wonder if the stuff you’re talking about is the nasal mist by simply saline or is it actual drops or irrigation type of bulb thing, I’m not even sure how to describe it. :dunno:
